Loud/Soft using a dial - Ms. Hebert's class
Often times, students use the words "low" and "high" when they really mean "soft" and " loud." It is no surprise; we all often say to turn the volume "down low" or "up high." Students in Ms. Hebert's class experimented with the idea of saying loud/soft while using a huge "dial" on the board to represent their thoughts. They chose a short song for us to sing and then we all had to follow the dial as they moved it, making our singing louder or softer as necessary to match the dial. It was a lot of fun!

Rock Passing Game - Mrs. Sack's class
Students in Mrs. Sack's class learned a song and game about passing "rocks" (really, beanbags). The song comes from Africa, and you'll hear them singing in an African language called Akan. If they do the movements right, you will see them move the beanbags around the circle like a machine.

Celebrating another kind of Music in Action
On days when you have Music Class, I will try to take pictures of students who wear something musical or purple (my favorite color). I'll try to post as often as I can!

Rhythm Reading and Writing - Mrs. Hendricks' Class
Mrs. Hendricks' class has been working on reading rhythms. Today we took it a step further and wrote our own rhythms. We read our own, we read each other's, and we played everyone's work on the rhythm sticks. Tomorrow we hope to add more instruments!

Student opinions about last week's concert
We did some reflection and some opinion writing about last week's concert in which the 4th and 5th grade classes performed. Students were asked about their favorite song from the concert and to explain why it was their favorite. I think we got some really great ideas!

A Concert From the Director's Point of View
Ever wonder what it's like to be the director of a concert? Well, let me tell you. It's mostly fun, mixed with a bit of frustration, nerves, and sweat. Yes. Directing a concert can get very sweaty!
Today's concert was no exception, but I must say it was more fun than usual. Maybe because we picked really fun and col songs to sing. Maybe it's because the students had smiles on their faces as they were singing. Maybe it's because of the awesome dancing that happened during "Sir Duke." I can't put my finger on it, but I really enjoyed myself and I hope you did, too.
Since I was busy directing and playing, I wasn't able to take pictures during the program. I'm hoping the 4th and 5th grade teachers will share some of their great photos with me so I can add them to my blog, too. Check back for updates on that!
